Somehow Church Stretton does not lend itself to Fantasy Art same way that - does but it fascinates him in that no matter where he walks he sees something that genuinely inspires him to paint it.

It is very individualistic with its own climate. When it rains in Church Stretton it doesn't necessarily rain just down the road. The mists which cover the hills are spectacular. Very like Austria or Switzerland. Basically the town is made up of Sandford Avenue where all the shops are - and Tea Rooms galore and the High Street where the pubs can be found that we frequent daily as a studio break. The shops are mainly gift shops with one or two charity shops which don't differ that much so there is fierce competition. Church Stretton is surrounded by the famous "Blue Remembered Hills" written about by A.E. Houseman. Six separate hills, Caer Caradoc, Lawley, Wrekin, Hazler, Ragleth and to the rear of our house the Longmynd (Long Mynd) with its famous hotel (The Longmynd Hotel), set up when the Victorians decided to make Church Stretton a Spa, which did not succeed. You can have coffee, Tea or a beer while viewing the views which magnificent. You get to see gliders, paragliders, balloons, and wonderful clouds. All very beautiful. The pubs (The Wine Vaults, The Copper Malt House, The Kings Arms, The Bucks head) are mainly old fashioned in their composition which many real ales and there is the old Hotel (The Hotel) "The Copper Malt House" where a dreadful fire took place during the 1960's (nineteen sixties) which no one can ever forget. We live on the outskirts of the town with spectacular views front and back. Most houses are similarly blessed. There is a flood plain opposite where we live which used to be fields of sheep and there was an asylum for those with mental problems. The famous St. Dunstans Charity was also here during the war. The tea rooms are very interesting too as are the three restaurants two Indian and one English. We have sampled them all. Our favourite tea room is dark and dim at the bottom of a flight of steps but we also like The Acorn cafe a wholefood restaurant which we frequent a lot. Our favourite restaurant is one of the two Indian ones, the food is exceptional as is the service. All in all Church Stretton, small though it, has something for anyone. Every year there are Bluebells in Rectory Field massive amounts of them and there are wonderful walks all around up hills or on the flat. Church Stretton is renowned by geologists, walkers, hikers, cyclists and bikers. These roar through the town at speed. Our garden is full of the natural plants of South Shropshire. Renowned for its Alpine plants it used to be visited by gardeners and those with the knowledge of growing these things. It is still full of exotic and rare plants though we are encouraging it to be a natural wild country garden. It is really gorgeous and most of the older exotic plants still remain, but a few of the trees have had to come down for safety reasons. Everyone in Church is fortunate in their gardens - planting and sowing offers all sorts of advantages. The thing is that Church Stretton is traditionally a town of retired people and the elderly (though it boasts its share of Artists and writers and Actors and now attracts those involved in digital work and other home businesses) so they get the pick of the draw of gardeners which means gardeners are never out of work.
