"En Plein Air. Bishop's castle, Shropshire, UK.. A mystery.. While
on a walk out on the edges of this English rural town, not far from the
Welsh border, I came across a wonderful farm. It wasn't very hard to
understand what sort of farming went on there because of the
overwhelming smell of cows (and what cows do) and this was my first raw
introduction to rural imagery of this sort and a very early en plein
air rural watercolour, and I have to say, it was quire challenging from
a perspective I had not bargained for. I'd
expected the challenge to center on how easy or hard it would be to
paint my very first rural watercolour but the reality on the day was
that on trying not to pass out from the "unfamiliar smell" that for a
committed urban dweller was "a new experience". Amusingly,
because there was going to be a clear limit to how long i could stand
to be in the vicinity, I had to work very fast and the outcome, hardly
expected, was that I had spontaneously invented a fast, spontaneous,
lively and spartan style of working, which it is unlikely would have
transpired sitting in the studio thinking about how I might paint in
watercolours. But, a mystery remains . . . . . . . . . . Try
as I might, on subsequent visits to Bishop's castle, I cannot locate
the farm, and it was a pretty big farm, so this is puzzling. Further
and deeper exploration is needed because there were many interesting
scenes to paint there, geese I remember with affection, paddling around
in a giant puddle in the middle of a muddy road, with wonderful light
falling on the water. An the Three Tuns Brewery is a beckoning thought, also! |
